Outset Law is a boutique family law firm based in Vancouver, BC, founded by Oliver Spinks. The firm focuses primarily on separation and divorce, helping individuals and families navigate some of the most emotionally and legally complex moments of their lives. The brief was to build a brand that could carry the weight of those moments while still feeling forward-looking, modern, and human.



The Challenge

Family law has a branding problem. Most firms in the space rely on visual language borrowed from corporate litigation: dark blues, serif fonts, formal imagery. It signals authority but not empathy, and it positions the lawyer as the dominant presence rather than the client's outcome. Outset Law wanted to break from that entirely. Their differentiator was not just legal expertise, but clarity, accessibility, and a genuine focus on what comes next.



Strategy and Positioning

The name Outset carries everything. An outset is a beginning, and that reframe is the strategic core of the entire brand. Divorce, separation, legal transitions are not endings. They are the moment before a new chapter. The positioning "legal clarity for life's hardest transitions" holds both truths at once: the difficulty of what is being navigated, and the sense of direction on the other side. The brand's job was to make people feel held, not intimidated.
